THE LANGUAGE OF ART: A Virtual Studio & Artist Workshop

Students will learn to think like an artist as they use a direct method of painting, beginning with an underpainting and progressing to a finished work of fine art. Lesson videos are pre-recorded and based upon classical methods of training. Registration is one device per household. Recorded lessons are available for a minimum of 60 days from purchase.

WHAT IS THE CLASS FORMAT?
There are two class formats, depending on the expanse of our reference.  

When references are simpler in nature, “lessons” will span two or more weeks. In the first week, we will work on the block-in / underpainting. In the subsequent weeks, we will continue adding layers of color with an eye to completion. Throughout the class, we will discuss the questions that an artist must ask and answer in order to achieve a faithful representation of their subject.

When a reference has more detail, the elements of the painting will be divided between four weekly sessions. The first may be a study of one aspect of the reference to be painted alla prima (all in one sitting), with the remaining weeks devoted to painting specific aspects of the reference until our oil painting is completed. 

WHAT COMES WITH YOUR CLASS?

REFERENCES:  A painting reference for each project will be supplied.

INSTRUCTOR CRITIQUES:  Email critiques from the instructor are optional; however, the student’s response has been overwhelmingly positive regarding the role of critique.  The instructor critique helps the student adjust aspects of the painting as needed which results in a more “fine art” result.  Over time, the student is better able to critique his or her own work.  With each piece of work receiving an honest, yet gentle critique, the student’s artistic vision is refined. Each Workshop comes with five critques.

CLASS LEVEL:  This oil paint class is for students of all levels, beginner through advanced.
